People in the United States have loved baseball for generations. Baseball players are celebrities and entertainers besides being athletes. Pick one player from first base and one player from second base. Pay close attention to the similarities and differences between the two players you research.
First base players: Babe Ruth, Cy Young
Second base players: Derek Jeter, Mike Piazza
Your research must answer the following questions that you will post here.
Birthday
What team do they play on?
What position do they play?
Have they ever played in the World Series?
Do they hold any records?
What's their number?
Final product: A podcast narrating your player's biography.

Final Part I
We have been creating our own word problems in math and learning how to solve them step by step. When making a word problem we need two parts and a whole. In order to solve the questions we think about what we know from the question, what do we want to know, and how are we going to get there?
It is your job now to use baseball and things relating to baseball to come up with different word problems. Here are some things you can use to come up with the questions:
1. Runs scored
2. Number of players
3. Money (buying food or other things at the game)
4. Seats in the stadium
5. Weather
6. Pitches thrown
7. Homeruns hit in one game
You can use any aspect of the game to create your questions that you will post here.
Hi Baseball Fans,
Baseball is one of my very favorite sports to watch. I grew up a Mets fan. For many years my favorite player was Lee Mazzilli. Lee Mazzilli wore number 16!! Just like our school. My husband's family are New York Yankee fans. I've had to sit through many games. I don't mind because I really love the game. As many of you know, my son is now at college. One of his classmates is a former Yankee player! He is now retired and is a Yankee favorite. I guess it proves that we can all learn at any age.
I look forward to reading your blogs about your favorite sports.

Imagine that you are at Yankee Stadium. What are some of the things you see, hear, touch, smell and taste?

You just read about your favorite ballplayer using steroids. How does that change your opinion about him? Should Hall of Famers who have been exposed as steroid users lose their title? What do you think?
We are lucky to have our very own minor league team - the Staten Island Yankees! Have you ever been to a game there? Two summers ago we had PS16 day at the stadium. It was lots of fun. Teachers, students and their families attended. We all sat together and enjoyed the game. Write about your experience at a ball game. There is plenty of action at a ball stadium. Do you know the name of the SI Yankee's mascot? What are some of the things you've experienced?

Have you taken our survey?

This is a picture of Derek Jeter saluting the fans after he got his 1,270th hit at Yankee Stadium and broke Lou Gehrig's record.
Examining Stats
1. Derek Jeter 1,271 hits
2. Lou Gehrig 1,269 hits
3. Mickey Mantle 1,211 hits
4. Bernie Williams 1,123 hits
5. Joe DiMaggio 1,060 hits
How many more hits does Derek Jeter have than Joe DiMaggio? Do you think it is fair to compare a player from 2008 and a player from the 1940s?
